Ditch the Filters: Tips to feel more relatable on social media
Written by: Emma Bogert
Out with the same old boring content, in with a new wave of relevance that makes social media fun again. If you’ve been in the social scene for a while, you’ve probably noticed a shift in what your audience truly values – and if I had to sum it up in one word, it’s authenticity.
Being authentic online
Authenticity is all about being your true self when sharing content with your audience. When you’re watching something online, you don’t want to feel like you’re being sold a fake version of reality – you want to feel like the person behind the screen is genuinely on your side. It may seem like a lot, but the steps to connecting with your audience are easier than they seem.
Step 1: Know who you’re talking to
First, think like you’re talking to a friend. How would you share your life with someone you’re close to? Would you say things the same way, or would you be more laid-back? Balance is key here. You can keep your content strategic and plan things out, but also try to keep a relaxed tone with your posts. When you’re sharing with your audience, just keep it relaxed. To make connecting more friendly, make sure your content is something you truly stand behind. Are you just showing the highlights, the shiny and fun stuff? Or are you keeping it real, sharing the laughs and the imperfect moments too?
Step 2: Finding your “thing”
Never forget to check in on how you’re feeling. How do you feel when you’re filming content? Are you motivated to share something new, like a cool hack or product? Are you proud of what you’re creating or does it feel more like a chore? When you find what you enjoy doing, then posting on your account isn’t going to feel like a second job. Social media is meant to be fun, so don’t spend your time stressing over something you don’t even enjoy doing! There are many different formats you can test out for your social media accounts. Some might include:
- Sharing reels of yourself talking about your product
- Creating engaging graphics to promote sales
- Recreating funny, viral memes and reels
- Posting carousels of your services
If your content isn’t sparking anything for you, it might be time for a change… or, consider bringing in a social media team (hint, wink, nudge) to help out.
Step 3: Interaction
Be sure to engage with your audience. Like we said before, your followers are now your new best friends, so reply to their comments, like their stories, and interact with the people who engage with you! It helps build a stronger connection with your viewers, making you a person they can trust. Plus, by opening the door to engagement, you create a growing community and reach new areas of social media that you wouldn’t have before.
Keep it real
Being real on social media can be tough, but the results are worth it. When you show up authentically, you build a brand that people actually connect with. That kind of connection can turn casual viewers into loyal followers sticking around for the growth of your content, making you a more valuable and relatable creator. So just be YOU, have fun with your content, and engage with your audience. Watch how much your social presence grows as a result!
